ABOUT ME
Born ‘Barry Penland’ in the obtuse shadow of the Tacoma Dome, I am also know PIXELFLIP as a VJ on stage and around town. I survived suburban childhood in Western Washington State with pen and sketchbook in hand, but now hail from Los Angeles where I work and play with digital media – emphasis: film and video; music and documentary.
After graduating from Evergreen in 1998 and a three-year stint with Nextel Communication, I decided to merge my love of tech with the artist within, and so in 2001, I moved to Vancouver B.C. to study multimedia development at the Vancouver Film School. While I studied, I began mixing and manipulating video imagery at ‘Passion’ parties for Scott Audio/Club Productions and found a new favorite past-time. I returned to Seattle in 2003 where I continued mixing and mashing live and pre-generated video content for SunTzu Sound, Shameless and the Broken Disco crews, while working for a post production house Sadis & Vaughn.
Seattle is a forever love, but in 2007 I jumped at a chance to move to L.A. to work with the exceptionally bright crew at Current TV in the Music Production wing. The move proved positive as I now live and breathe my job with joy. The launching of our first 30min music documentary show has consumed my time, but I have projected, promoted and photographed for the DotBleep, Fist Fight and Hot Biscuit crews here and aim to do more in the coming years.
I like to say that I am rooted in abstraction, but ultimately I take cues from the energy of the people and the party for my artistic direction.
